Baby Newsboy Cap

I have been a little disappointed with the hats available for boys at baby clothing stores. All I wanted was a cute cap with a little brim but couldn't find one for less than $20. So, I decided to make one.

This pattern uses a 6mm hook for the body of the hat and a 5mm hook for the brim with light worsted weight yarn (I used Knit Picks Mighty Stitch). It is written for both 0-3 month and 3-6 month sizes.

Gauge: 8 sts in 7 rows is a 2 inch square.

All sizes, with a 6mm hook:
Row 1:  8 hdc in a magic circle, sl st to form a ring.
Row 2:  Ch, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to join. (16 sts)/div>
Row 3:  Ch, [hdc, 2 hdc in next st] repeat 8 times, sl st to join. (24 sts)
Row 4:  Ch, [hdc 2, 2 hdc in next st] repeat 8 times, sl st to join. (32 sts)

0-3 month size:
Row 5:  Ch, [hdc 7, 2 hdc in next st] repeat 4 times, sl st to join. (36 sts)

3-6 month size:
Row 5:  Ch, [hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st] repeat 8 times, sl st to join. (40 sts)

All sizes:
Rows 6-12:  Ch, hdc in each st around, sl st to join. (36, 40 sts)

3-6 month size:
Rows 13-14:  Ch, hdc in each st around, sl st to join. (40 sts)

All sizes:
Brim Row:  Ch, hdc 7, switch to 5mm hook, 2 sc in each of next 13 sts, turn,
Ch, skip 1 st, reverse sc 24, turn,
Ch, skip 1 st, sc 22, turn,
Ch, skip 1 st, reverse sc 20, turn,
Ch, skip 1 st, sc 18, 2 sc in the next st, skip the chain, 1 sc around the sc at the end of the next row, 2 sc in the skipped sc on the next row below, skip the ch, 1 sc around the sc at the end of the last 5mm row, switch to 6mm hook, hdc in each of the remaining (16, 20) hdc around, sl st to join.

Border Row:  Ch, sc 7, switch to 5mm hook, sc 1, 1 sc around the sc at the end of the next row, skip the ch, 2 sc in the skipped sc of the next row, 1 sc around the sc at the end of the next row, skip the ch, 2 sc in the first st of the next row, sc 17, 2 sc in the next st, sc 5, switch to 6mm hook, sc in each of the remaining (16, 20) sts around, sl st to join.

Tie off.

I hope you enjoyed this free crochet baby hat pattern!

  2. Hi! Everything in this pattern has worked up nicely for me until I got to the brim. I'm confused on the instructions for this area. After 2sc in each of the 13 sts, and the turn, the next row indicates reverse sc. However, if I turn at the end of the row before as indicated, I would not be reverse sc in the brim anymore. I have never turned when starting the next row with rsc.

Also on the 5th row of the brim, I believe it should be sc 18, not 8, in order to complete the brim.

Would you be able to clarify these for me?

    1. Hello!

First, that is a typo on the brim and should say "sc 18", not 8. I have done the hat half a dozen times and am surprised that I did not catch that mistake! Thank you.

Second, the reverse sc puts the "right side" of the single crochet on the top of the brim for each row, even with turning. If you didn't turn and stitched the reverse sc down the row, you would end up with the wrong side facing up which is not the look I wanted. This is completely optional. You can simply sc each row of the brim like normal if it is easier.

Just for clarification, by "reverse sc", I mean to insert your hook from back to front, pull up a loop, then complete the stitch like normal. You still make this row from right to left like a normal sc row, hence turning at the end of the row.

    2. Thank you so much for the clarification of "reverse sc!" When I think of that, it is crocheting from left to right, and I have only done it as a finishing stitch in the past, so it made no sense to use in the middle of a project. I appreciate the quick response and can go back to finish off the project now! Thank you!
